“A total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” This is the written statement Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump released through his presidential campaign group. This is in response to the mass shooting that happened in San Bernardino, California which is now treated as an act of terror. Trump also supplied as a supporting document the research performed by the Security Policy that states that a quarter of Muslim-Americans believe that attacking Americans in the United States is an acceptable act of jihad. The research also shows that half of Muslim-Americans want to be able to choose to be governed by Sharia Law instead.
Greatness Over Political Correctness
Trump has successfully turned all the controversial statements he had made prior to his decision to run for the Republican nomination into an advantage. He says that he was never afraid to speak his mind and if he becomes the next president of the United States, he will disregard any and all standards of political correctness if they get in the way of realizing his goal which is to “Make America Great Again”. His desire to stop Muslims from immigrating into the country drew praise from his supporters and other Americans who fear that terrorists may enter the nation by posing as migrants or tourists. However, a vast majority of Americans still disagree with Trump’s statement.
Two-Pronged Backlash
President Barrack Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party were quick to denounce Trump’s statement. Obama said that Muslims are our brothers and we should not discriminate against them. We should not hate Muslims for being Muslims. The acts of IS and other terrorist organizations do not represent Islam. In fact, a huge portion of the casualties of terrorism are Muslims. Terrorists are heartless monsters and we should stop associating them with Muslims. Even Trump’s fellow Republicans were appalled with what Trump said. This may very well be one of the few instances in which the Democratic Party and the Republican Party agreed on something, that Trump is wrong.
Beyond Immigrants
Apparently, Trump is not just targeting Muslim immigrants. He also wants to bar Muslim tourists from stepping on American soil. He also wants to Muslim-American citizens residing abroad prevented from coming back to the country. Trump is displaying an extraordinary fear of Muslims which a lot of people think is just sowing hate and doing nothing helpful. As the Republican nominee in the coming November 2016 Elections, Trump should not divide the nation. Instead, he should work on helping the American people get united. After all, a United America will definitely help make America great again.
